Reading on a plane in Sweden

About Me

My career began freelancing in Japan, India, and Australia, before I moved to East Timor in 1999 to cover the vote for independence and the violence that followed.
I became the East Timor Associated Press reporter before joining the BBC World Service, where I spent over two decades reporting from international hubs including South Africa, Jerusalem, Washington, and New Delhi.
Whether reporting as the BBC Nepal Correspondent or later as the BBC's South Asia Editor, my focus has been on international news and women’s stories. I believe that investigative journalism, report editing, and creative writing share the same responsibility—to shine a light on dark places .
This philosophy has shaped my award-winning investigative documentaries, my scripted audio series, and my narrative non-fiction book, Red River Girl (Virago/Penguin Random House). Today, I balance my time between writing plays and my first fiction novel and collaborating as an independent editorial consultant. After years of living out of suitcases , I now live and work in rural Wiltshire.

“You can make anything by writing.”
